About Big Horn, Wyoming
Oliver Perry Hanna was the first settler around Big Horn. He built a cabin on Hanna Creek in 1878. He made a 400-mile round trip to Fort Laramie for seed and a plow. That made him the first farmer to cut a furrow in future Sheridan County. He drew many early settlers to Big Horn City, founded in 1882.
After the Battle of the Rosebud on June 17, 1876, General George Crook camped on Little Goose Creek. Big Horn sits in that creek's valley today. Crook was fishing on Tepee Creek in the mountains while the Lakota and Cheyenne defeated Custer at the Little Bighorn.
