This vintage linen postcard captures a "big pool" tucked just off U.S. Route 40 near Hancock, Maryland, along the storied corridor between Hagerstown and Cumberland. The road it follows traces the path of the historic National Road, one of America's earliest federally funded highways, which helped carry travelers and commerce westward across the rugged country of Washington County.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and warm, saturated colors. This edition comes from the Tichnor Brothers Collection of Boston, a name beloved by collectors of mid-century American travel scenes. We've carefully restored and color-revived it here at KNOWOL, bringing back the bright, inviting tones of the original.
