About Big Rock, Iowa
A huge, lofty stone stands in the village of Big Rock. In very early times it was called Big Rock. Some also called it Spring Rock. A fine large spring of pure water gushes out at its base. Even a township in Clinton County took its name, Spring Rock, from this stone.
Peter Goddard laid out the village of Big Rock in July 1855. A settlement had already started there. The stage route from Davenport to Anamosa came by, and a post office opened in 1853. Eli Goddard was the first postmaster. A Mr. Garrison opened the first store that same year.
- A world champion wrestler's hometownBig Rock, in the northern part of Liberty Township, was noted as the home of Farmer Burns. He was a former world champion in catch-as-catch-can wrestling.
