About Big Spring, Maryland
Big Spring is a community of 85 people in Washington County, Maryland, and it takes its name from the spring at its heart. Because the spring gave a steady supply of fresh water, people probably settled beside it very early.
By the late eighteenth century the area around the spring had become a busy place. County maps from 1794 and 1808 record a tavern and two grist mills here, near the Potomac River.
