About Bismarck, Missouri
Bismarck took shape in western St. Francois County around farming and a railroad junction. Platted in 1868, the community was named for German statesman Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck as part of an effort to attract German immigrants. Its streets, civic history, and wartime name debate reflect distinct chapters in the city's past.
- Railroad BeginningsBismarck's early growth was connected to nearby farming and the junction of two railway lines.
- Tree-Named StreetsExcept for Main and Center, all of Bismarck's original streets received the names of trees.
- First IncorporationThe county court incorporated Bismarck as a town in 1877, abolished that incorporation in 1881, and the community was later reincorporated.
- Name DebateAfter the United States entered World War I, some residents proposed renaming Bismarck as Loyal, but most citizens rejected the change.
- 2020 PopulationThe 2020 census recorded 1,239 residents in Bismarck.
