About Black Creek, Pennsylvania
Black Creek Township lies in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Formed from part of Sugarloaf Township in 1848, it was named for the stream that crosses the township. Early activity included clearing forests for farms, cutting timber, running mills, and holding classes in a former log residence.
- Township EstablishedBlack Creek Township was created from a portion of Sugarloaf Township on August 8, 1848.
- Mills by 1810Martin and William Rittenhouse built the township's first sawmill and gristmill in 1810.
- First SchoolhouseAn old Rittenhouse log residence became the first school, with Tripp identified as its earliest teacher.
- 2020 PopulationThe Census Bureau recorded 1,909 residents in 2020.
