About Black Forest, Colorado

Black Forest is a community of 15,097 people in El Paso County, north of Colorado Springs, and it takes its name from a thick stand of ponderosa pine. The land lies in the old Pineries, a belt of pine forest that once covered about 1,000 square miles. When pioneers arrived in the late 1850s, wood was hard to find on the plains, so these trees became valuable. The first sawmill went up in 1860, and General William Palmer later bought 43,000 acres for his Colorado Pinery Trust.

Logging reached its peak in the summer of 1870. More than 700 teamsters were hauling logs that year, and 1,000 lumberjacks and tie hacks were cutting them, mostly for the railroads. By the 1880s farming and ranching had taken over, and potatoes became the crop the area was known for. In the early 1920s families began to stay all year, building log homes from the nearby timber, and the old Pinery came to be called Black Forest.

  • A log school in 1922During the hard times of 1921, the area's first permanent settlers built the Black Forest School out of logs, and it gave the new community its identity. Ruth Maddox opened its doors as the teacher that fall of 1922, and she taught every one of the first eight grades herself. It was the only community building in Black Forest, so it also held Sunday school every week and the yearly Christmas program. The school is now on the National Register.
  • Colorado's worst fire, 2013A wildfire started near Highway 83 and Shoup Road on June 11, 2013. Close to 35,500 people had to leave their homes. The fire burned 15,500 acres, destroyed 511 buildings and killed two people. Counted by homes lost, it became the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history up to that time. Firefighters had it fully contained around June 20.
  • Kept rural by choiceMost of the area was zoned for five-acre minimum lots in 1965. In the early 1970s, plans for a major highway corridor on the east side led residents and county staff to draw up a land use plan, adopted in 1974 as the Black Forest Preservation Plan. In 2006 residents voted against becoming a city.
  • People here 800 years agoArrowheads and charcoal pits show that people lived in the pines at least 800 years ago. The Ute and Comanche used the trees for shelter, fuel and lodgepoles. The Kiowa pushed them out around 1800, and almost 40 years after that, the Arapahoe and Cheyenne teamed up and forced the Kiowa out in turn.
