About Blackfoot, Montana
Blackfoot is a census-designated place of 109 people in Glacier County, Montana, on the Blackfeet Nation. It sits beside the Flatiron and Willow creeks, about 26 miles west of Cut Bank, and U.S. Route 2 runs past its southeast edge.
A trader got here before the town did, opening a store in 1889. Blackfoot itself began in 1893, when the Great Northern Railway chose the spot as a division point, and the railroad turned the place into a shipping center for the ranches around it.
- Joseph Kipp's store, 1889Joseph Kipp opened a store at Blackfoot in 1889. That was four years before the Great Northern Railway arrived and gave the town its start.
- Cattle bound for ChicagoAfter the Great Northern made Blackfoot a division point in 1893, ranchers drove their herds to the corrals here. From those pens they loaded tens of thousands of cattle onto the railroad, headed for the Chicago stockyards.
