About Blackstone, Virginia
Blackstone is a town of 3,352 people in Nottoway County. Before the Revolutionary War, a village grew up here and took the name Blacks and Whites after two men who kept taverns. In the mid-nineteenth century, trains on the Southside Railroad stopped in the village, and that line became the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio in 1870 and later part of the Norfolk and Western.
The village's streets were laid out in a grid in 1874. On May 11, 1875, the village became Bellefonte, but on August 4, 1882, it went back to Blacks and Whites. At its incorporation on February 23, 1886, it took a new name, Blackstone, to honor the English legal scholar William Blackstone. The depot made the town a market where dark-leaf tobacco was sold and shipped out by rail, and the trade helped the town prosper.
“Three blocks south is the campus of the former Blackstone Female Institute, after 1915 Blackstone College for Girls, a teacher-training school that opened in 1894 with some 75 students including 29 boarders.”
- Schwartz Tavern, 1790 to 1840Blackstone's oldest building is Schwartz Tavern, which went up in stages between 1790 and 1840. It now serves as a museum, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Blackstone College for GirlsThe girls' school's first president was Bishop James Cannon Jr., who became the leading prohibition campaigner in the nation. In 1933 a student named Bea Arthur, later a famous actress, was active in its drama program. The campus went on to house the Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center, which drew 19,000 visitors a year until it closed in 2016.
- Fort Pickett next doorThe U.S. Army opened Fort Pickett near Blackstone in 1941, and during World War II it was a huge training center. After the BRAC Commission closed it in the 1990s, it became headquarters of the Virginia National Guard. The State Department's Foreign Affairs Security Training Center opened there in November 2019, and after the fall of Kabul in 2021, 5,900 Afghan refugees were housed there for a time.
- A downtown revivalThe state gave Blackstone a Main Street designation, and a $1 million project to restore its downtown began in 2008. The $4 million James Harris medical center opened in 2009. Two years earlier, the Robert Thomas Carriage Museum had opened with 28 restored antique carriages, sleighs and buggies.
