About Blue Bell, Pennsylvania
Blue Bell is a community of 6,506 people in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County. Its first name was Pigeontown, after the great flocks of passenger pigeons that once gathered here, a bird that is now extinct. In 1840 the town was renamed for the Blue Bell Inn, which stands where Skippack Pike meets Penllyn Blue Bell Pike, and the local post office took the inn's name too.
In the fall of 1777, George Washington brought 10,000 troops to camp around the area. He and his officers made their quarters at Dawesfield on Lewis Lane, and now and then he spent the night at the inn, which was known then as the White Horse. His bedroom there, room 6 on the front of the second floor, was later turned into a small display of military items for visitors.
- Ranked 14th by MoneyIn July 2005, Money magazine put Blue Bell on its list of the best places to live in America, ranking it 14th out of 100. The town is known for its large homes and business parks, and it sits among the most affluent places outside Philadelphia's Main Line.
- Headquarters of UnisysThe information technology company Unisys runs its global headquarters from Blue Bell, and UniTek Global Services, a telecommunications, cable and satellite company, is based here as well. Aetna keeps an office in town, and Wings Field Airport is in Blue Bell too.
- A college's main campusMontgomery County Community College has its main campus in Blue Bell, and the town's public schools belong to the Wissahickon School District. In 2006 the old Whitpain Public School joined the National Register of Historic Places.
