This vintage linen postcard captures the Blue Star Motel in White Marsh, Maryland, a roadside stop welcoming travelers along U.S. Route 40, twelve miles north of Baltimore. Long a key artery of the eastern seaboard, Route 40 traces part of the historic National Road corridor, and the motels and service stops that lined it told the story of America's growing love affair with the open road.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards , named for the textured, fabric-like paper they were printed on , captured everyday American scenes in bright, saturated color. This card comes from the Tichnor Brothers of Boston, one of the most prolific publishers of the era, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
