About Bolivar, New York

Bolivar was named for General Simon Bolivar, back when the South American patriot was a popular hero. By 1940 most people here worked in the oil fields. Some farmers pumped small amounts of oil with donkey engines. After milking their cows, they brought in the oil, and truckers hauled it from the gate to refineries.

Bolivar sat at the heart of the Allegany Oil Field during the boom of the late 1800s. That first boom had faded by the early 1900s. Starting around 1920, new methods for pulling more oil from old wells brought the industry roaring back.
