Baldwin's name reaches back to the creation of Baldwin Township in 1844, when a county survey recorded 10,446 acres. The borough's hills and hollows include neighborhoods such as Willock, Surgeon Hall, Horning, and Curry.
- A Township BeginsCounty officials established Baldwin Township on February 24, 1844, following a survey that measured 10,446 acres.
- Henry BaldwinThe township honored Pittsburgh lawyer Henry Baldwin, who represented the district in Congress from 1817 to 1823 and joined the United States Supreme Court in 1830.
- Early FamiliesAn 1889 county history described a substantial German presence among the first settlers and included the Horning family among early local families.
- Streams and CoalBeck's Run and Street's Run were identified as major streams, while farming shaped local life and underground coal supplied the area's principal wealth.
