About Bourneville, Ohio
Bourneville is a community of 241 people in Twin Township, Ross County, on U.S. Route 50. Settlers made permanent homes here in the 1790s, and around 1807 Job Harness put up a mill on Paint Creek, a short way south of where the village would later stand.
Colonel Bourne laid out the town in 1832, and it took his name. A post office opened that same year, and Bourneville has kept one ever since, now under the ZIP code 45617.
- A name shared by chanceA town in Normandy, France, is also called Bourneville, but the match is a coincidence. The French name comes from a much older form, recorded in Medieval Latin as Burnenvilla in the 12th century, while the Ohio town was named for Colonel Bourne.
- Steam mills in 1874A stock company built the Bourneville steam mills in 1874. William A. Jones was one of its main stockholders, and before long he became the mills' only owner.
- An ancient stone workIn 1847 a stone work built by Native Americans stood near Bourneville. Ephraim George Squier and Edwin Hamilton Davis surveyed it, and the site appeared in Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, the book they published in 1848.
