About Bowmansville, Pennsylvania

Bowmansville is a community of 2,989 people in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County. Samuel Bowman, born on December 1, 1789, put up a large two-story sandstone dwelling and store on the southeast corner of the crossroads in 1820. From that building he ran a country store and also worked as a surveyor and conveyancer.

The little settlement around his store still had no name in 1840. After that year's presidential election brought a new administration to Washington, a post office opened in the village, with its mail coming from Blue Ball. Bowman was appointed postmaster, so the new office was named for him, and the village took the same name.

“Bowmansville is situated in the valley formed by two branches of Muddy Creek, issuing from the rocky hills along the Berks County line, which form the water-shed between the Delaware and the Susquehanna.”
History of Lancaster County, 1883
  • Settlement day at the storeThe first of April was the general settlement day, and on that date Bowman's store filled with people. Deeds were signed and handed over, purchase money was counted out and paid, and the business of the whole surrounding neighborhood was settled under his roof.
  • BaumanschteddelIn Pennsylvania German, Bowmansville goes by the name Baumanschteddel.
  • A turnpike plaza with its nameThe Pennsylvania Turnpike passes through Bowmansville without an exit of its own, but the turnpike's Bowmansville Service Plaza carries the village's name. Reading Road, Pennsylvania Route 625, runs through the center of the village, north to Reading and south to East Earl.
