About Box Elder, Montana
Box Elder is a community of 85 people in Hill County, near the county's southern border. Its first townsite was laid out in 1888 and named Bremer, after an early homesteader who had come from Ohio, and a post office opened there in 1889. The country around it turned out to be too dry for most of the people who came, but the town held on and kept growing.
- From Bremer to Box ElderThe town eventually gave up the name Bremer and took the name of a creek close by, whose banks are lined with box elder trees.
- Home of the Chippewa-CreeBox Elder serves as the headquarters of the Chippewa-Cree tribe. The tribe's Stone Child College stands 8 miles east of town, in Boneau.
- The Box Elder BearsBox Elder Public Schools teach students from kindergarten through 12th grade in town. The school teams are the Bears, and Box Elder High School competes in Class C.
