About Brandy Station, Virginia
The fight at Brandy Station was the first great cavalry battle of the war. The Federal side lost over 900 men killed, wounded and missing. The Confederates lost 485 and captured three pieces of artillery and more than a hundred horses. It ended as a great Confederate victory.
On June 8, 1863, a grand cavalry review took place near Brandy Station. Stuart's whole command passed before the commanding general, Robert E. Lee. The corps held twenty-two regiments, perhaps 8000 men. The army was then on the move for Gettysburg.
- How the battlefield was savedAfter the war, Brandy Station returned to quiet farm life. Late in the 1900s, plans to develop the battlefield sparked a preservation drive. The American Battlefield Trust and its partners have saved over 2,000 acres. In 2024 Virginia opened Culpeper Battlefields State Park, which includes Brandy Station land.
