Vintage Map of Bridgeport, Connecticut 1875 | Restored Historic Print
Beautifully designed. Printed on archival paper for modern walls.
This vintage map of Bridgeport, Connecticut was drawn and published in 1875 by O.H. Bailey & Co. This restored edition keeps the original street names, bridges, churches, factories, wharves, steamboats and the lettered and numbered guide to the city's landmarks.
About This Historic Map
Drawn from an elevated bird's-eye perspective, the view looks up the Pequonnock River from the harbor, with downtown on one bank and East Bridgeport on the other. About 20,000 people lived here when it was made. East Bridgeport was still new: P.T. Barnum and William H. Noble had begun laying it out in 1851, and Wheeler and Wilson moved its sewing machine works there in 1856.
The guide names the Post Office, Court House, General Passenger Depot, Naugatuck Dock, Orphan Asylum, Seaside Park and Waldemere, along with about twenty churches and the city's makers, among them the Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing Co., the Elias Howe Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co., the Jacob Kiefer Furniture Manufacturing Co., the Standard Publishing Co. and the Farmer Publishing Co. Pictures along the bottom show the Seaside Park shore, the Kiefer furniture factory, the Wheeler & Wilson works and Waldemere, the residence of P.T. Barnum.
