About Bristol, Tennessee

Bristol is a city of 27,147 people in Sullivan County, on the Tennessee side of State Street, the line it shares with Bristol, Virginia. Evan Shelby came to Sapling Grove in 1771 and built a fort there, and the fort became the center of a settlement. The ground later belonged to the Reverend James King. In 1852 Joseph R. Anderson of Blountville, who was married to King's daughter, bought 100 acres of it and gave the town the name Bristol.

For roughly its first hundred years, Bristol was a rural village. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it grew into an industrial town, because the Southern Railway met the Norfolk and Western Railroad here. Local tradition says the whole tract was first traded for a white horse and an old gun. Decades later, lots on State Street were selling for five hundred dollars per front foot.

  • The Bristol Sessions of 1927In 1927 Ralph Peer of Victor Records came to Bristol to record the traditional music of the region. On July 31, A.P. Carter brought his family from Maces Spring, Virginia, to try out, and the Carter Family earned $50 for every song. The same trip produced Jimmie Rodgers's first records. In 1998 Congress named Bristol the "Birthplace of Country Music."
  • Rhythm & Roots each SeptemberEvery year on the third weekend of September, the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion fills downtown, where Tennessee and Virginia meet. The festival honors the city's part in the start of country music.
  • Tennessee Ernie Ford's hometownThe singer and actor Tennessee Ernie Ford was born in Bristol in 1919.
  • NASCAR's short trackBristol Motor Speedway, a NASCAR short track, hosts several NASCAR races. Bristol Dragway, also in the city, holds the Ford Thunder Valley Nationals, a national NHRA event.
