About Brooklyn, Ohio
Brooklyn is a city of 11,359 people in Cuyahoga County, a suburb in the Cleveland metropolitan area. In 1966 the city passed the first seat belt law, and in 1999 it passed the first law aimed at motorists using cell phones.
Both of those traffic laws came while John M. Coyne ran the city. He served as Brooklyn's mayor from 1948 to 2000, and no other American mayor has held the office for a longer unbroken stretch.
- Elvis on stage in 1955On October 20, 1955, Elvis Presley performed in the Brooklyn High School auditorium. It was his first concert in the northern United States and is thought to be the first of his shows ever filmed. Cleveland DJ Bill Randle organized the night, and Presley wasn't the headliner. Pat Boone, The Four Lads, and Bill Haley & His Comets were all bigger names on the bill. His first Ed Sullivan Show appearance was still nearly a year away.
- A rock 'n' roll landmarkBecause Presley played there, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum gave the high school landmark status as one of the nation's rock 'n' roll sites. On October 20, 2005, exactly half a century after the show, Priscilla Wright and Bill Haley's Original Comets came back for an anniversary event, and the BHS Chorale sang a song with Wright.
- The Hugo Boss plant savedIn 2009 the Hugo Boss plant in Brooklyn shut down for three months, and its jobs were set to go overseas to Turkey. The union and the City of Brooklyn worked out a compromise, and a three-year contract reopened the plant soon after.
