About Bureau Junction, Illinois
On November 9, 1854, the first passenger train from Chicago to Peoria came through Bureau Junction. It rode the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad to the junction. There it switched to the Peoria and Bureau Valley Railroad to reach Peoria. That trip opened rail service between the two cities.
Bureau Junction grew up where the Bureau Valley and Rock Island railroads met. The railroad company built a large hotel for travelers who changed cars here. Major William Shields laid out the town.
