About Caddo Gap, Arkansas
A bronze statue of a Tula Indian stands at the Caddo Gap crossroads. Its inscription says the spot marks the farthest point west that De Soto reached on his journey from Florida. The United States De Soto Expedition Commission confirmed that claim.
In 1541 Hernando de Soto and his soldiers fought the Tula people at Caddo Gap. The Tula were loosely tied to the Caddo Confederacy. The Spanish called them the fiercest fighters of their whole journey. After the clash the expedition turned back east toward the Mississippi River.
