About Calumet Township, Michigan

Calumet Township is a charter township of 6,263 people in Houghton County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Native Americans dug native copper out of this ground thousands of years before the mining companies came. The township was created at the Houghton County Clerk's Office on November 27, 1866, and its officials first met on Monday, December 17, 1866, at the headquarters of the Calumet Mining Company.

Copper built the villages inside the township. The village of Calumet, first called Red Jacket, took its present name in 1929. During the mining boom it was the biggest city on the Keweenaw and earned the nickname "Queen City of the Copper Country." The population has fallen since then, but no township in Houghton County has more people today.

  • The Wolverine MineThe Wolverine Mine opened in 1882 and started producing on a large scale in 1890. At its height it ranked sixth among the copper mines of Lake Superior, and it shut down in 1925. Mineral collectors still prize its copper, silver, epidote and quartz specimens. The community of Wolverine, in the far north of Houghton County, takes its name from the mine.
  • Ice, opera and a memorialThe Calumet Colosseum, home ice of the Calumet Wolverines, is the oldest indoor ice rink in the world still in use, and the public can skate there. The Calumet Theatre is the oldest opera house in the country that a town built and still owns. Italian Hall Memorial Park, also in the village of Calumet, remembers the people killed at Italian Hall on Christmas Eve of 1913.
  • The Gipper's hometownGeorge Gipp, known around here as The Gipper, is the most famous person to come from Laurium, a village in the township. Laurium dedicated the George Gipp Memorial Park on August 3, 1935, where Lake Linden Avenue meets Tamarack Street. The town's ice arena, once called the Bicentennial Arena, also carries his name.
  • Daniell Park, 1937In 1937 Joshua Daniell gave Laurium the land at Pewabic and Third Streets as a public space. The Works Progress Administration built the park, and it has hosted a summer concert series every year since 1985.
