About Cameron, West Virginia

From the West Virginia A Guide to the Mountain State: "CAMERON, 47.2 m. (1,170 alt., 2,281 pop.), a prosperous farm town at the headwaters of Grave Creek, has streets that climb the steep hillsides in stairlike fashion; houses on the slanting lots are supported on one side by stilts."

From the History of the Upper Ohio Valley: "When the B. & O. railroad was completed the town of Cameron sprang into existence, the naming of the new town was left entirely with the elder David McConaughey, who christened it Cameron, in honor of his friend Samuel Cameron, who was a prominent official of the railroad."
