About Campbell’s Island, Illinois
Near the turn of the 20th century, a streetcar company bought Campbell's Island to build an amusement park. A streetcar bridge followed in 1904. The island became a popular resort with cottages for rent. Its House-In-the-Woods offered dining and orchestra concerts. It burned in 1911 but was rebuilt the next spring.
The community takes its name from John Campbell, who lost the 1814 Battle of the Rock Island Rapids. After the Sauk were defeated in the Black Hawk War of 1832, the Quad Cities area opened to settlement and the island got its name.
- Living with the riverLow-lying Campbell's Island is prone to flooding. Many homes there are raised or set on stilts. They are built that way to limit damage in times of high water. The Great Flood of 1993 was one such time.
