About Campbelltown, Pennsylvania
Campbelltown is a community of 5,922 people in Lebanon County, on the eastern edge of Hershey. John Campbell, a Scotch-Irish farmer, came to Pennsylvania in 1751 and settled in what was then Derry Township, Lancaster County. In 1752 Thomas and Richard Penn, sons of William Penn, granted him a warrant for 100 acres, and by the time he patented the land on August 6, 1759, his survey had grown to 352 acres. He laid out lots rented under the ground rent system, and the village of Campbell's Town grew up on them.
Campbell died between 1775 and 1776, and the land passed to his brother Patrick of Cumberland County. Peter Grubb, ironmaster of the Cornwall Furnace, bought the tract in 1779, and it later went to Robert Coleman. In 1785 Philip Wolfersberger bought the whole 352 acres from Coleman. The tract was split into four parcels in 1809 for his sons Peter, John, Frederick and Philip. A post office opened in the village in about 1811, and a Wolfersberger was its first postmaster.
- A bell from St. NazaireUnder the 1940 Lend-Lease deal, 50 U.S. Navy destroyers went to Britain. One, USS Buchanan, launched in 1919, was renamed HMS Campbeltown for Campbeltown in Argyll, Scotland. On March 28, 1942, loaded with 8,500 pounds of explosives, it smashed into St. Nazaire, a German-held French port, and wrecked a dock the German navy badly needed. Its saved bell stayed in Scotland.
- Lent back to the Royal NavyThe bell now sits in the South Londonderry Township municipal building. In 1988 Campbelltown's residents voted to lend it to a new HMS Campbeltown (F86) for the rest of that frigate's service. When the ship was decommissioned, the bell came home to the town on June 21, 2011.
- A stop on the Horseshoe PikeThe Downingtown, Ephrata and Harrisburg Pike, which everyone called the Horseshoe Pike, received its charter in 1803 and was completed in 1819, later becoming part of U.S. 322. Travelers on it passed through the village and stayed in its few hotels. In 1908 a street railway, brought by Milton S. Hershey, gave villagers a ride to Harrisburg, Lebanon and beyond.
- Salem's limestone churchIn the center of town stands Salem United Church of Christ, a small church built of limestone and one of the oldest in Lebanon County. Families who traveled the old pike road in the mid-to-late 1700s settled to farm the good land around the village, and many of them lie in the cemetery behind the church.
- An F3 tornado in 2004Around 3 pm on July 14, 2004, the National Weather Service warned Lebanon County of a tornado, and minutes later an F3 with winds over 160 miles per hour hit the far southeast corner of the village. Nobody died, though several people were treated for injuries. No tornado to hit Lebanon County has been bigger or costlier.
