This vintage linen postcard captures the busy work of canning tomatoes at Pocomoke City, Maryland, a scene of industry along the river that gave the town its name. Set on the Eastern Shore in Worcester County, Pocomoke City has long drawn its livelihood from the surrounding farmland and waterways, and canneries like this one turned the region's harvests into goods shipped well beyond the marsh country of the lower Chesapeake.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock that gave their bright inks a soft, woven look. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images are preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. It has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back the warmth and detail of the original.
