About Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is a city of 2,768 people in Cape May County, and no town in New Jersey lies farther south. The Kechemeche, a Lenape people, lived here before the Dutch captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey mapped this shore between 1611 and 1614 and left the cape his name. Settlers from the New Haven Colony came later, and by the middle of the 1700s families from Philadelphia were already spending their summers here, which is why Cape May is called the country's oldest seaside resort.

The state made it the borough of Cape Island in 1848, out of parts of Lower Township. It became Cape Island City in 1851 and took the name Cape May City on March 9, 1869, while a railroad that opened in 1863 brought bigger crowds. In 1878 a fire burned for five days and leveled 30 blocks in the middle of town.

  • Tommy's FollyThomas H. Hughes opened a wooden boarding house, The Big House, in 1816. Neighbors called it Tommy's Folly, sure it was too big to pay, but after Hughes was elected to Congress in 1828 he renamed it Congress Hall. Presidents Pierce, Buchanan, Grant and Harrison were guests, and Harrison used it as his Summer White House. In 1882 John Philip Sousa led his Congress Hall March on the lawn, and the hotel was rebuilt in brick after the 1878 fire.
  • A president at the ballparkFounded in 1886, the Cape May City Athletic Association opened Athletic Park a year later. The Philadelphia Phillies came here for spring training in 1888, 1891 and 1898. In August 1891 President Benjamin Harrison came by the park and saw the Gorham club, an African American team, beat the home team 5 to 0.
  • Saved by volunteers in 1970Frank Furness is credited with designing the Emlen Physick Estate, an 18-room house from 1879.
  • Where the Coast Guard trainsThe Navy set up a section base here in 1917, first in an empty amusement center, where the old skating rink served as the mess hall. The Coast Guard moved all its East Coast recruit training to Sewell Point in 1948, then the rest of it in 1982, so every Coast Guard recruit now starts out in Cape May.
  • A school built in 1928When Cape May kept its elementary schools segregated, the city built the Franklin Street School in 1928 for African American children. After an $11,000,000 renovation, the building reopened as the city library. A few streets away, at 632 Lafayette Street, the state's official Harriet Tubman Museum tells of the years Tubman lived in Cape May.
