About Carrollton, Illinois

Carrollton is a city of 2,485 people and the county seat of Greene County, Illinois. Its town square came first, and Cyrus Tolman and Charles Gregory are said to have built the first frame house in town, a home on the square's east side. Thomas Carlin, the 7th Governor of Illinois, later made Carrollton his home and died here.

A newcomer's account in the county history shows the young town. He first stayed at David Tefft's tavern, a one-story double frame building facing the square. About a week later Dr. Ero Chandler helped him find room and board with Henry Robley, a farmer and blacksmith who lived more than a mile east of the courthouse, well outside town.

  • A wild night after musterEvery man in the county militia had to come to Carrollton for general muster and drill. Many of the rough Macoupinites couldn't find beds or wouldn't look, so they spent the night drinking and fighting. They cut off part of Mike Dodd's ear and nailed it to the blacksmith shop door, where it stayed for days. They shaved the mane and tail of Mr. Carroll's handsome saddle horse, swapped house signs and carried off gates, fences and well buckets.
  • Advice from a sober manLater the same visitor stopped at Mr. Harrison's story-and-a-half tavern south of the square and went to a grocery for cigars. Twenty or thirty Macoupinites were inside, drinking and singing. One quiet man asked his destination and urged him to leave before the crowd noticed, so he went back. About twenty years later in Springfield he found that man, a legislator dying of congestive fever, fetched him a doctor and wrote his will.
  • Illinois's oldest bankCarrollton has two banks, Carrollton Bank and CNB Bank. Records show that CNB Bank is the oldest continuously active bank with its headquarters in Illinois.
