About Carthage, Mississippi

Carthage is a city of 4,901 people and the seat of Leake County, near the middle of the county. When it was picked as the county seat in 1834, the town was called Leakville, but on July 31 of that year it took the name Carthage. The Harris family, early settlers, chose the name to honor their old home of Carthage, Tennessee. A courthouse and jail went up in 1836, and the town was incorporated in 1876.

Steamboats on the Pearl River, 2 miles south of town, hauled goods to and from Jackson, and in 1900 the town of 416 people had three churches, an academy and a Masonic lodge. Rail came late. In 1914 the Merrill Brothers Logging Company laid a logging line from Canton to McAfee through Carthage, and in 1927 the Canton and Carthage Railroad took it over and started commercial service. The line was abandoned in 1960, and by 1964 Carthage had grown past 2,000 people and become a city.

  • Four courthouses since 1836The first courthouse was built in 1836. A brick one took its place in 1877 and was itself replaced in 1910. The present courthouse, designed by E. L. Malvaney, was finished in 1939 and is now a Mississippi Landmark at the heart of the Carthage Historic District.
  • The Carthaginian since 1872The town's weekly paper, the Carthaginian, was founded in 1872 as a Democratic newspaper. Around 1900 L. M. Garrett owned and edited it, and it is still published today.
  • A goodwill festival in 1948Carthage started holding a yearly Tri-Racial Goodwill Festival in 1948, open to all of its white, African American and Native American citizens. The directors of the first festival kept the three groups apart, but that was changed in later years, and the local paper praised the spirit of the 1949 festival.
  • World's largest chicken plantNo chicken processing plant on earth is bigger than the one on Highway 35 north of town, which can handle 2.5 million chickens a week. Choctaw Maid Farms first owned it, and a trailer park built in the mid-1990s housed its growing Hispanic workforce. Between 2000 and 2010 the Hispanic share of the town rose from 1.9 to 12.3 percent. Tyson Foods bought the plant in 2003, and it employs 1,700 people.
