About Cascade Heights, Georgia

In southwestern Atlanta, Cascade Heights is a historic neighborhood marked by rolling terrain, roomy lots, substantial houses, and one of the city's densest tree canopies. Cascade Road follows a corridor formerly known as Sandtown Road. The area's story spans rural farms, mills, postwar subdivision, and the growth of an affluent African American community.

  • Ancient Travel RouteNineteenth-century Sandtown Road followed the older Sandtown Trail, which linked Stone Mountain, the Creek village of Sandtown, and routes onward into Alabama.
  • Springs and WaterfallsCascade took its name from three small waterfalls beside old Sandtown Road; a resort later grew around the springs, and a spring house survives.
  • Battle of Utoy CreekFrom August 4 through 7, 1864, Union and Confederate forces fought in and around the present-day nature preserve.
  • Peyton Road AffairCity barricades placed on Peyton and Harlan roads in December 1962 were removed after a court declared them unconstitutional on March 1, 1963.
  • Community TransitionAtlanta annexed the area in 1953; by the late 1960s, Cascade Heights was predominantly African American.
