About Castine, Maine

Castine began in the winter of 1613, when an Acadian leader set up a small trading post to deal with the Tarrantine people. That makes it one of the oldest towns in New England, seven years older than the Plymouth Colony. The town is named for the French baron Jean-Vincent de Saint-Castin.

In July 1779 British troops landed at Castine and began building Fort George. Massachusetts sent a fleet and about 1,200 men to drive them out, with Paul Revere in charge of the cannon. The attack failed, and the Americans destroyed their whole fleet as they retreated. It was the worst American naval defeat until Pearl Harbor.
