About Cedar Creek, Texas

Cedar Creek is a community of 3,154 people in Bastrop County, 11 miles west of Bastrop, and it takes its name from the creek beside it, a tributary of the Colorado River. In 1832 Addison Litton, born in Missouri, was granted a league of blackland prairie lying across the creek. Litton settled there with Mary Owen Litton, his wife from Alabama, and Jesse Billingsley, John Day Morgan and other pioneers arrived soon after. Morgan put up the townsite's first log cabin.

Churches and mail came next. In January 1842 a Methodist preacher led a large service at the Litton home, Elisha Billingsley opened the first post office as postmaster in 1852, and Presbyterians had organized a church by 1855. By 1884 about 600 people lived in Cedar Creek, which shipped cotton and farm produce, but the town had shrunk to 250 by 1896.

  • A normal academy in 1884Cedar Creek's school was the Central Texas Normal Academy. It finished its first yearly session in June 1884 with 101 pupils enrolled, in the same year the town counted 600 people.
  • Oil on the Yost farmDrillers started looking for oil around Cedar Creek in 1913. In 1928 they found an oil pool on the Yost farm, about 4 miles from town. The pool was never a large one, but it produced oil in commercial quantities in the mid-1940s, when Cedar Creek's population climbed back to 300.
  • The election of 1888After the Civil War, Cedar Creek's Black population grew. In May 1888 voters in the precinct chose two African American men for office: Orange Weeks, whose name also appears as Wicks, became justice of the peace, and Ike Wilson became constable.
  • The clash of June 1889In June 1889 an assault and battery charge against Andy Litton, a young white man, set off a fight between armed groups of white and Black men. Two men of each race were casualties. Police arrested Wicks and Wilson on murder charges, and over the following years many African Americans were killed or forced out of Cedar Creek.
  • The county's first public parkBastrop County bought Cedar Creek Park from the Bastrop school district in 2008, and it became the county's first public park. Grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Lower Colorado River Authority paid for work on its 37 acres: ball fields, a disc golf course, nature trails, historic sites and a butterfly garden. Close by, McKinney Roughs Nature Park spreads over 1,100 acres beside the Colorado River, with 17.6 miles of trails and an archaeological site.
