About Centennial, Wyoming
Centennial is a community of 283 people in Albany County, at the foot of the Medicine Bow Mountains. Long before there was a town, Union Pacific logging crews camped on this site while they cut lodgepole pine for ties on the first transcontinental railroad. They left after clashes with Native Americans. In 1875 men working for mine superintendent I. P. Lambing and Laramie lawyer Colonel Stephen W. Downey found gold on Centennial Ridge.
Miners and prospectors rebuilt a camp on the old site in 1876. They named it for the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Most of the gold had been dug out by 1877, but the town survived. The merchants who had come to supply the miners stayed on to sell to nearby ranchers, and ranching, timber and coal kept the valley alive.
- The Lord, Help Push and PullBoston financier Isaac Van Horn and associate Fred A. Miller hoped new gold would make Centennial a business center, and in 1901 they formed the Laramie, Hahns Peak and Pacific Railway. The 40 miles of track from Laramie took six years to lay, so locals called it the Lord, Help Push and Pull Railroad. It reached Centennial on June 17, 1907, the year a bank opened in town. The Centennial Depot was nominated for the National Register in 1982.
- A sawmill and a newspaperLoggers returned in 1905, this time cutting wood to supply a coal mine near Coalmont, Colorado. Van Horn's Acme Consolidated Gold & Mining Company bought timber land around Centennial and the townsite itself. The company opened a sawmill, a planing mill and a lumber yard, and it started a town newspaper, the Centennial Post.
- The Platinum Queen, 1923Gold seekers returned in 1902 and again in 1923, but they never found much. On September 23, 1923, A. J. Hull and two Northrops, Jesse and B. F., staked the Platinum Queen on Centennial Ridge, about 2.3 miles southwest of town. Most work around the mine came to a halt when the 1929 stock market crash brought on the Great Depression.
