About Centropolis, Kansas

Centropolis is a community of 100 people in Franklin County, about 11 miles northwest of Ottawa. Perry Fuller was the first white settler on the town site. In 1855 he opened a store there to trade with the Ottawa Indians who lived nearby.

The store did well, so in 1856 Fuller organized the Centropolis Town Company and started selling lots. He expected his town to become the county seat, then the capital of Kansas Territory and later of the state. For a short time in the 1850s, Centropolis was in the running for territorial capital. The capital never came to Centropolis, and the town stayed small. Its post office closed in 1930.

  • Central plus metropolisThe town's name joins two words, central and metropolis. It matched Perry Fuller's plans, since he hoped the town would grow into the center of government for both Franklin County and Kansas.
  • The Kansas Leader of 1857The Kansas Leader began printing in Centropolis in the spring of 1857. It was the first commercial newspaper in Franklin County. The only earlier paper in the county was one Jotham Meeker put out for the Ottawa Baptist Mission.
  • The county seat went eastThe Territorial Legislature passed over Centropolis and made St. Bernard, two miles to the east, the seat of Franklin County. Winning the seat did not help St. Bernard grow. Its post office was later closed and renamed Minneola.
