About Century, West Virginia
Century is a coal town of 111 people in Barbour County, West Virginia, as counted in the 2020 census. The Century Coal Company built it, opening two mines in the southern part of the county and putting up a coal camp beside each one.
- Coal to last a hundred yearsThe community got its name from the coal under it. People believed the deposits here were large enough to keep the mines working for a full hundred years, so they called the place Century.
- One shaft, one slopeThe company numbered its two operations. Century No. 1 was a shaft mine, while Century No. 2 was a slope mine, and each of the two mines had its own company camp.
- First coal in 1897, or 1916?In 1918, a story in The Black Diamond reported that the Century mines first shipped coal in 1897. The state's mining records disagree, because they show no coal mined by the Century Coal Company until 1916.
