About Channing, Texas

Channing is the seat of Hartley County, where the 2020 census recorded 281 residents. The community began in 1888 as Rivers, honoring railroad paymaster George Channing Rivers, but adopted Channing later that year because another Texas settlement already used Rivers. Its early development was closely connected to the XIT Ranch.

  • XIT General HeadquartersWhen Willis D. Twichell platted the business district in 1891, Channing served as the XIT Ranch's general headquarters.
  • Two County Seat ElectionsElections in 1896 and 1903 were needed before Channing replaced Hartley as the county seat.
  • Courthouse JourneyXIT cowboys moved the frame courthouse to Channing on wheels, and it became a hotel after a brick courthouse was built in 1906.
  • Early Panhandle LibraryA local women's club founded a public library in 1908, among the earliest established in the Panhandle.
  • 1931 District FireA fire on September 6, 1931, destroyed seven buildings in Channing's business district.
