About Charleston, Illinois

Charleston is a city of 17,286 people and the county seat of Coles County, Illinois. Benjamin Parker was its first settler, in 1826, and the town was named for Charles Morton, who ran its first post office. Charleston was established in 1831 but did not incorporate until 1865. By 1900 it had grown to 5,488 people, with woolen and flour mills, a foundry, a canning factory and four newspapers.

Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas, settled his family in 1831 on a farm at Goosenest Prairie, south of town. Abraham helped with the move and then left to make his own start at New Salem, but he came back to the Charleston area often, mostly on business at the county courthouse. His last trip was in 1859, when he called on his stepmother and visited his father's grave. The family cabin, 8 miles south, is now the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site.

Six Union soldiers, two Copperheads and one bystander died, and the clash caught the notice of President Lincoln and of newspapers nationwide.
