About Charleston, Missouri

Charleston is a city of 5,056 people and the county seat of Mississippi County, in the corner of Missouri close to where the Ohio River flows into the Mississippi. The first settlers made their homes on the north side of today's town, on land known in 1805 as Matthews Prairie. In 1837 Joseph Moore paid $337 for 22.5 acres and laid out the town there.

Mississippi County picked Charleston as its seat in 1845, and the town has had a post office since 1847. River trade and the rich farmland around it kept the town growing. A new courthouse designed by J.B. Legg was finished in 1901, and it served the county until a fire badly damaged it on February 10, 1997, after which it was torn down.

  • A robbery with a receiptWar reached Charleston on August 19, 1861, when a battle here killed thirteen soldiers of the Missouri State Guard and one Union soldier. Less than two weeks later, on September 1, 1861, the Confederate general M. Jeff Thompson walked into the Union Bank of Charleston and handed the cashier a note, allowing him an hour to get his bosses' approval to turn over the vault keys.
  • The earthquake of 1895On October 31, 1895, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake on the New Madrid Seismic Zone struck with Charleston at its center. Nearly every building in town was damaged, sand volcanoes burst from the ground, and a pier of the Cairo Rail Bridge cracked. Chimneys fell as far off as St. Louis, Memphis, Gadsden and Evansville. It was the strongest quake in the region since 1812, and it left Henson Lake, south of town, much larger than before.
  • Two Charlestons, or a prairieSome say the town's name comes from nearby Charles Prairie. Others say it was borrowed from Charleston, South Carolina, a city named for King Charles II of England. The early historians Douglass and Eaton wrote that a man named Rodney chose the name for the South Carolina city, though they never said why.
  • Dogwood-Azalea Festival since 1968Every year since 1968, Charleston has held its Dogwood-Azalea Festival, which shows off the old homes and gardens found all over town.
  • 12 state basketball titlesThe boys basketball team at Charleston High School has won 12 state championships, most recently in 2022.
