About Charlo, Montana
Charlo is a community of 385 people in southern Lake County, inside the Flathead Indian Reservation and 22 miles south of Polson, the county seat. Before it took its present name, the town went by Big Flat, and later by Charlotte and Tabor. In 1918 tribal members helped rename it for Chief Charlo, a Salish leader, and in the Salish language the place is called sallu.
“Charlo was a Salish chief who for decades refused to leave the Salish homeland in the Bitterroot Valley.”
- Big Flat on the freight trailIn its Big Flat days, the settlement stood on the route that freighters used when they hauled goods between Ronan and the railroad at Dixon.
- Fourth of July on Main StreetOn the Fourth of July each year, Main Street fills for a parade, followed by a cookout. Horseback riders march in it with graduates of the town's school, veterans and service members from every military branch, and the local fire department. Charlo also hosts an annual Fireman's Benefit and Dinner that raises support for its volunteer firefighters.
- Owls, ospreys and waterfowlCharlo is home base for the Owl Research Institute, which studies every species of owl. Near the lake, ospreys nest on two platforms, and a live camera lets viewers watch them. Ninepipes Reservoir and the Herak Waterfowl Production Area sit at the edge of town, and flood irrigation there helps sustain bald eagles, pheasants, western painted turtles and white-tailed deer. To the southwest lies the CSKT Bison Range, which the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes manage.
- Home of the VikingsThe Charlo School District teaches kindergarten through 12th grade, and its teams are the Vikings. In 2023 it enrolled 229 students, and the high school competes in Class C.
