About Chico, Washington

Chico is a community of 2,723 people in Kitsap County, on the Dyes Inlet waterfront just south of Silverdale. Its name honors Chief William Chico, a Suquamish head chief who lived from around 1843 to 1910. The tidal waters of Dyes Inlet reach Puget Sound by way of Port Washington Narrows, which runs through Bremerton.

  • Named by B. S. Sparks, 1889B. S. Sparks chose the name in 1889 for the new town on Dyes Inlet. He honored Chief Chico, who owned the land next to the town site. Edmond S. Meany recorded the naming in his 1923 book on the origins of Washington place names.
  • Chief Chico's point and creekChief Chico made his home on a point of land near the town that people now call Erlands Point. Chico Creek, which forms the town's southern boundary with Erlands Point and Kitsap Lake, carries his name too.
