About Childersburg, Alabama

Childersburg is a city of 4,754 people in Talladega County, on the Coosa River. In the fall of 1540, Hernando de Soto's Spanish expedition rested here for about a month at an Indian town, and the city now promotes itself as "the oldest city in America." After the Creek Indians were forced from their land in 1836, white settlers moved in, and a post office opened in 1855 under the name Childersburgh, for one of the leading early families. The final H was dropped later.

The first local industry was a sawmill, built in 1868, the same year the Alabama and Tennessee River Railroad reached the area and gave businesses a way to ship their goods. Charcoal makers burned the sawmills' leftover scraps into fuel for the coke ovens of the growing steel mills to the north. A flood in 1886 sent up to five feet of water into the downtown stores, President Grover Cleveland stopped to give a speech on October 21, 1887, and the town was incorporated in 1889.

  • Capital of Coosa provinceFor over 250 years this was an important Indian town and the capital of the Coosa province. After de Soto's visit in 1540, Spanish, French and British explorers and traders came through, and early writers described plentiful crops, both wild and planted, that fed a large population. By the 18th century the Abihka people, part of the group later called the Creek, held the area.
  • From 500 people to 6,000Childersburg stayed at about 500 people until 1941, when the Alabama Army Ammunition Plant was built here ahead of World War II. Run by DuPont, it made TNT, DNT and nitrocellulose, and in secret it produced heavy water for the Manhattan Project. The town grew to around 6,000 people while the plant ran, until August 1945. Once it closed after the war, most of the workers soon moved away.
  • A cave recorded in 1796The cave named for de Soto, now Majestic Caverns, lies about six miles northeast of town. Native people sheltered there for centuries, and in the mid-1960s archeologists dug up a 2,000-year-old Woodland Period burial. In 1796 it was the first cave in the U.S. to be officially recorded, and during the Civil War the Confederates mined it for gunpowder. Its main room rises 12 stories.
  • A mill that kept grindingThe Kymulga Grist Mill and its covered bridge joined the National Register in 1976. The mill was still a working mill until floods in March 2012 damaged its foundation, and it was later closed as structurally unsafe.
