About Chinquapin, North Carolina

James Thigpen settled beside the Northeast Cape Fear River in the 1730s. He called his plantation Chinquapen Orchard. Chinquapin is an Algonquian word for a small cousin of the American chestnut. In 1754, Job Thigpen and his wife Annie shortened the name to Chinquapin.

Tories burned Chinquapin in 1780, likely as payback for Job Thigpen's service in the North Carolina militia. Job did not survive the war. His eldest son, Joab, rebuilt the plantation.
