About Chokoloskee, Florida

Modern settlement on Chokoloskee Island began in 1874 with the family of John Weeks. Adolphus Santini's family came next, and by about 1880 they claimed most of the island. Early settlers farmed, fished and caught turtles, selling extra in Key West. In 1899 the Santinis sold their claims to Ted Smallwood, who became the island's major landholder.

C.G. McKinney worked to bring Chokoloskee a post office in 1891. It was first called Comfort but took the island's name within a year. Apart from one man who stayed a few months, the island never had a resident doctor. McKinney gave most of its medical care for 50 years.

  • The island's long Calusa pastFor more than 1,500 years before Europeans reached the area, the Calusa and their ancestors made Chokoloskee Island their home. By 1763, when Spain gave Florida to Great Britain, nobody lived there.
