About Cincinnati, Ohio
Cincinnati is a city of 309,317 people and the seat of Hamilton County, on the Ohio River across from the mouth of the Licking River. Mathias Denman, Colonel Robert Patterson and Israel Ludlow came ashore here in 1788 and chose the spot for a settlement. The surveyor John Filson called it Losantiville, a made-up name built from French and Latin pieces that meant the town facing the Licking. Fort Washington went up in 1789. On January 4, 1790, territorial governor Arthur St. Clair renamed the town for the Society of the Cincinnati, the group of Revolutionary War officers he led.
Steamboats reached the Ohio in 1811, and the town began trading with St. Louis and New Orleans downriver. Cincinnati became a city on March 1, 1819, and grew into the region's center for packing pork. Its population went from 9,642 in 1810 to 24,831 in 1830. Work on the Miami Canal began on July 21, 1825, and the canal reached Middletown in 1827 and Toledo by 1840. Irish and German immigrants arrived in the late 1840s and filled the city's need for workers. By 1850 it had 115,000 people, who called it the Queen City.
- Named for a Roman farmerThe Society of the Cincinnati took its name from Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a leader of the early Roman Republic. He rescued Rome in a crisis, then gave up power and went home to his farm, and he became a symbol of public virtue. Israel Ludlow may have suggested the name to St. Clair.
- Porkopolis and the Flying PigsPork packing made Cincinnati so well known that people called it Porkopolis. For the city's 200th anniversary in 1988, British artist Andrew Leicester topped four steamboat smokestacks with winged pigs at the entrance to the new Bicentennial Commons park. People laughed at them at first, but the city came to love the Flying Pigs, and the Flying Pig Marathon is named for them.
- The City of Seven HillsIn June 1853 the West American Review listed seven hills that ring the city. They were Walnut Hills, Mount Adams, College Hill, Mount Auburn, Vine Street Hill, Fairmount and Mount Harrison, which is now called Price Hill. The nickname recalls the seven hills of Rome.
- Where Uncle Tom's Cabin beganCincinnati sat on the line between free Ohio and slave-state Kentucky, and many people escaping slavery crossed the river here. Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in the city, met people who had escaped, and drew on their stories for Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852. Her house is on the National Register, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center was completed downtown in 2004.
- A railroad the city ownedIn 1880 the city finished building the Cincinnati Southern Railway to Chattanooga, Tennessee. It stayed the only interstate railroad in the country owned by a city until Cincinnati sold it to Norfolk Southern in March 2024.
