About Clarence Center, New York

Clarence Center is a hamlet of 2,605 people near the middle of the town of Clarence, in Erie County. David Van Tine came around 1829 and opened its first store, so for some years the little settlement went by the name Van Tine's Corners.

A post office opened in 1847 under the name Clarence Center, and Van Tine became its first postmaster. Other merchants soon followed. Andrew Metz started a business in 1849 and John Eshleman in 1851, and Eshleman later took a turn as postmaster too. In 1853 the "Peanut" rail line was built through the hamlet, which made it the first community in the town of Clarence with a railroad, and its station also took the name Clarence Center.

  • The Peanut line, 1853 to 1977Trains served Clarence Center on the Peanut line for well over a century, until service ended on December 31, 1977. Most of the track was later torn up. A hiking and biking trail that also carries the Peanut name now follows the route, linking the hamlet with Akron to the east and Transit Road, NY Route 78, to the west.
  • The Eshelman storeThe J. Eshelman and Company Store stands at 6000 Goodrich Road, in the hamlet where John Eshleman went into business in 1851. The store joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
  • The four cornersThe center of the hamlet is the crossing of Clarence Center Road and Goodrich Road, which people call the four corners, or just the corners. A business sits on each corner: one holds a bank, another a coffee shop, a third a day care center, and the last a small group of gift shops. Clarence Center Elementary School is just east of the crossing.
