About Clarendon, Texas
Clarendon is the Donley County seat on U.S. Highway 287 in the Texas Panhandle. Established in 1878 as a Christian colony, the settlement developed first near Carroll Creek and the Salt Fork of the Red River, then moved south to meet the railway. Its 2020 census population was 1,877.
- Saint's RoostClarendon's many ministers and early absence of bars led rowdier Panhandle residents to give the town this nickname.
- The 1887 MoveWhen planned tracks passed six miles south, residents voted overwhelmingly to relocate their homes and businesses beside the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway.
- Clarendon CollegeClarendon College opened in 1898 and is identified as the oldest center of higher education in the Texas Panhandle.
- Bugbee's StudioHarold Dow Bugbee's father built the western artist-illustrator's two-story ranch home and studio northeast of town in 1912.
- Old Site SubmergedGreenbelt Reservoir covered the original Saint's Roost townsite in 1968, when the old cemetery was moved south along State Highway 70.
