This restored linen postcard captures Clay's Motel along U.S. Route 40 in Aberdeen, Maryland , a roadside stop from the early days of American auto travel, when motels like this welcomed drivers heading up and down the East Coast. Running through the heart of Harford County, Route 40 was one of the nation's original numbered highways, connecting Baltimore and Philadelphia long before the interstates, and Aberdeen sat squarely on that busy corridor.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards earned their name from the textured, fabric-like paper stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. Many of the finest were issued by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the warmth and detail of the original.
