About Codell, Kansas
Tornadoes struck Codell on May 20 for three years in a row, in 1916, 1917 and 1918. The first two missed the town. The third was an F4 that hit it directly just after dark. It wiped out the school, the Methodist church and the hotel. The strange streak landed Codell in Ripley's Believe It or Not. The school was rebuilt, but the town never fully recovered.
Union Pacific founded Codell as a railroad depot in 1887. The railroad could not strike a deal with the nearby town of Motor, so it built a new stop just west of it. Motor's post office moved to Codell in 1888. Its buildings followed, and Motor was soon abandoned.
