About Cold Brook, New York

Cold Brook is a village of 250 people in Herkimer County, in the southern part of the town of Russia. It takes its name from the stream that runs through it, and the water power of that stream drew settlers to the spot after 1800. Seth Fenner had arrived by 1810, and the next year he put the stream to work at a mill.

The village grew up where the State road crossed Cold Brook, about two miles northeast of Poland. That road is now New York State Route 8, the village's main street, which climbs the sloping ground and runs 46 miles northeast to Speculator in the Adirondacks and 16 miles southeast to Utica.

  • The first grist-mill, 1811In 1811 Seth Fenner built the area's first grist-mill for Judge Bowen. It stood about twenty rods north of the spot where the village mill was running when the county history was written in 1893.
  • The 1857 feed millMilling stayed at the heart of the village. The Cold Brook Feed Mill, built in 1857 on the power of the stream, joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
  • A tavern and a mansionStephen and Arthur Smith kept Cold Brook's first tavern. In 1832 Benjamin Hurd built the Mansion House, and by 1893 it had taken the name Delevan House.
